Grade III+ White Water Course

If you have experienced at least grade II rivers and you aspire to harder rivers then white water improver is the next step. We will improve the fundamental paddling skills and so progress you on to being comfortable running grade III white water, possibly with drops of IV.

• Grade III rivers possibly with odd drops of IV

• Improve your White Water Grade

• Use the moving water so you glide down harder rapids

• Understand the best lines down each white water section

• Paddle classic rivers of North Wales

Your boat control will be refined and manoeuvres made more efficient. At all times we look to work with the moving water, rather than fighting it. This makes for a smooth and seemingly effortless descent. With the boat trimmed and balanced you will have the time to enjoy the classic grade III+ rivers around North Wales. White water safety will also be addressed and the logistics of running rivers.

Venues

North Wales is unique in that it offers a white water venue for all conditions. If it has been raining then out local rivers are ideal such as the Afon Llugwy below Capel Curig, Seiont near our base Arete Outdor Centre or Afon Conwy above Betws-y-Coed . During a dry period then the River Dee near Llangollen offers great sections of all gardes or the dam released Afon Tryweryn. We also have predictable tidal flows in the Menai Straits and around the Inland Sea on Anglesey. River levels can change by the day so a base like Betws y Coed can provide easy access to all possible venues with any last minute changes to the weather. If you don’t mind risking a slightly longer drive should levels below then you can stay near our base at Arete Outdoor Centre, Llanrug.

Kit

We have a large fleet of white water kayaks so we can provide the best boat for everyone.  The fleet includes Pyrhana Burns, Karnali and Everest, Dagger Mamba and Nomad, Liquid Logic. We also provide Werner blades or similar. Along with bouyancy aid, helmet and spraydeck we can also supply a white water cag and wetsuit. Please bring along any kit you may own, it is often more useful to be coached in your regular kayak. All kit is included in the course cost.

What Experience is Needed?

This course is for those with experience of grade II water that want to move on to harder grades. You should have a good forward stroke and be able to vary your speed. On flat water you want to be able to perform both quick tight turns and slower long open turns which may include using bow or stern rudders.

Course Costs & Dates

We run private courses for the Improver White Water Kayaking. Private courses can be run on dates that suit you and allow us to tailor the course content for each individual.

Private Bespoke Course:

Up to 4 people – £250 per day
Extra people at £50 per person. Best to have a maximum of 6 participants per instructor

Note the ideal ratio is 1:4 or less allowing us to run any river that matches your ability. Higher ratios are limited shorter white water sections or less continuous rivers. Extra instructors can be booked for bigger groups. Note our course costs include any river fees, unlike other providers.

We will arrange a convenient meeting point either near Bewts-y-Coed or use Arete Outdoor Centre as a base. Normally we meet at 0930 and return around 1630.
