  Winter Walking Courses in Scotland

 

We provide the opportunity to experience the magic that is winter mountaineering through our special winter skills courses. Learn how to safely operate in this environment through full days on the hill, using crampons and ice axes, to navigate the changing terrain.

The courses are based up in the hills of Scotland, from the valley base of Aviemore. These mountains provide a variety of snowy and icy venues during the winter, all of which are atmospheric and mesmerising.

This course enables you to make the first steps from summer to winter walking. Safely learn how to walk with crampons and use ice axes for security. Special emphasis will be placed on winter navigation and survival techniques. Each day techniques into assessing snow and ice conditions will be discussed and the effects of the weather.

The course days will be spent on the mountains, often having the opportunity to gain the top of various Munros. The aim is to allow you to progress towards being an independent winter walker and provide you with unforgettable days, along the way. A 2 day course will allow us to touch on the various skills, the 5 day course allows a full day on each skill and the opportunity to practise and consolidate learning, near the end of the week.

If you have previously been walking in the winter mountains before, then this course will enable you to sharpen your current skills in winter navigation, avalanche awareness, use of crampons and axes and emergency survival techniques. It also allows you to progress forward to safely negotiating steeper grade I ground. This may involve the use of a rope, so snow and ice anchors will be demonstrated and simple belaying methods.

The aim of the course is to give you the confidence to build towards completing such mountaineering routes as the Aonach Eagach ridge, which involve simple winter scrambling. A 2 day course will allow us to touch on the various skills, the 5 day course allows a full day on each and the opportunity to practise, near the end of the week.

The ability to navigate in the winter is made more complex through the lack of features in an all white environment. When the cloud comes in it is essential that you can pace and accurately use bearings to find your way and avoid possible hazards, on the mountain slopes.
